“Experienced guidance is the best support system of all”

When it comes to starting a new business, appropriate mentorship can mean the difference between success and failure; something Small Business Consultant, Eman AlAbdulghani, is keen to point out. So why is a mentor so important and what are the secrets to a successful startup?

Please introduce yourself to our readers:
I am a startup and small business consultant. I’m also the CEO and founder of BloominglifeGlobal for business incubations and of Alfay Group. I am passionate about entrepreneurship and women empowerment.

Tell us about your education:
I hold a Bachelors in Accounting and a Masters in Business Administration plus a Diploma in Investment Management.

Can you walk us through your career path?
After 12 years experience in the banking sector as an investment manager I joined the government sector as a financial specialist. More recently, I am collaborating with National Fund of Kuwait as an entrepreneur consultant.

Did you have any role models when growing up?
Well, I think many in this world have an inspiring story to learn from but I think as a woman, Oprah Winfrey has always been a role model due to her tough childhood and the journey of her life with wonderful charity work.

What does your current role entail?
Currently I am focusing on business consultation. I am specialized in startups and growing small business. In my workshops I help entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into a startup and grow their business. I am also collaborating with National Fund of Kuwait in mentoring and exploring entrepreneurship programs.

How do juggle between your professional and personal life?
It’s all about time management and how to create a balance in life. This is really important for a successful entrepreneur.

What has been your proudest moment so far?
The moment that I took a decision to quit my job and start my own business.

What’s one of the most rewarding experiences you’ve had as a business coach?
I was able to get to know people in depth and watch their business grow. There was an entrepreneur who was a mom and who had many difficulties in her life and with her startup. She ended up losing her money. After several sessions with her she managed to overcome her fears and start again and turned her startup into a successfully running business.

Why is having a coach so important, especially for small business owners?
Research and surveys prove that having a mentor is important for success. They help you to survive longer in business and to overcome many obstacles and problems you might face, especially in startups. Mentorship is one guaranteed way to gain experience from others. You gain network opportunities and reassurance.

What is the biggest mistake you see new entrepreneurs make?
Expecting success right away. In reality you have to be ready to face many obstacles and it takes a long time to grow a business. It takes even longer time to make money from a business. Another thing is ignoring your true passion. If you are just going for money you will never be a successful entrepreneur

What are your three top pieces of advice for anyone wanting to start their own business?
First, be passionate about what you do. You are going to devote a lot of time and energy to starting a business and building it into a successful enterprise so it’s really important that you truly, deeply enjoy what you do. Second, write a detailed business plan. Third, don’t do it alone. Find a mentor when you are starting a business. Experienced guidance is the best support system of all.

How do you define Business Networking and why do you feel it is important?
Communication and strong presence in the entrepreneurial ecosystem are productive approaches which will help entrepreneurs along their way to build strong relationships with others and in field of interests. Also, it helps them create and develop ideas and meet potential investors. Some of them might bring you opportunities, advice and inspiration. It’s really powerful in many different ways.

What are some of your hobbies?
Reading, writing and sports.

What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while working as a business consultant?
Building credibility was the most challenging thing. Building reputation is a great asset for a consultant but when you first get started you will rely only on your experience in your past professional work and some personal skills that you have. It’s a long road to build a reputation for yourself. It needs so much dedicated time and commitment.

What do you do to relax in your spare time?
I make sure to spend it with my family and go to gym.

What are you currently working on?
I do writing, especially business articles. I am currently working on a project for women entrepreneurs and will reveal it soon!

What are your plans for the future?
I have many plans and dreams in my mind; mainly to grow my business.

What is your favorite quote about entrepreneurship?
The best way to predict the future is to create it.
