FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “Dominican Republic” during of my journey.
Although the beaches at Dominican Republic are often the main draw for tourists, there is an experience to be had inside the lush jungles. Nestled in the mountains of the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range lies Dominican Republic’s most exhilarating attraction; going down 27 Waterfalls Damajagua! The Rio Damajagua is a river found in the northern side of the island, close to the city of Puerto Plata, and it forms twenty-seven natural waterfalls known as “charcos”. The word “charcos” is mistranslated. Charcos means pools, not waterfalls. There are in fact about 12 waterfalls and 27 pools at the 27 Charcos of Damajagua. On most days you can only do half of the 12 as weather and other factors may prohibit going up higher along the trail.
The minimum age is 12 years old, and this falls are not for the faint of heart! Just the half tour involves a physically moderate 60 minute hike. You will have an experienced tour guide and others offering assistance along the waterfalls guiding on how to place your hands (listen carefully to these instructions) to avoid injuries. They also rent water shoes for a small fee, and lifejacket and helmet are issued to you before starting the hike. Bug spray is highly recommended. Make sure your phones and cameras are water protected. Waterproof cases are sold there and other supplies.
What a refreshing way to let go of fear and just have fun. Will Smith said in a popular YouTube video that “The best things in life are on the other side of fear”. He is so right on that point. When was the last time you let go and stopped recording the concert on your phone and actually really focused on the performance? This is what the 27 Falls does to you. It makes you set aside your phone and just experience the moment. One that you will remember forever. For more information visit 27charcos.com.
My challenge for you who’s reading this is to push your boundaries and step outside your comfort zone and live more experiences. What is a boring ordinary life but working 9 to 5 and going home to eat and sleep to repeat the next day? Start planning your next trip to discover something new about yourself. Whether it be skydiving, scuba diving, wadi bashing, etc.; just get outside and get to the other side of your fears. That is where you start to really feel alive. What is the worst you could lose…your life? What is the greatest thing you can gain…your lived life. Be extraordinary!
